City Council At-Large

A thriving, vibrant Chamblee with local flavor

I’m a pragmatic liberal who loves calling Chamblee home. Ironically, the city code and permitting departments are in such poor shape that I find myself running on a pro small business platform. I want to make it easier for homeowners and business owners to navigate our city’s broken code and permitting process. I’m also committed to building safer streets and trails, expanding parks, protecting housing options, and making our city’s elections more fair.

Meet Will

The Thomason Family

Neighbor • Dad • Small-Business Owner

I grew up on a family-owned cattle and chicken farm where we raised over half a million chickens a year and more than 200 head of cattle. Man, that was tough. Threatened with having to stay on the farm if my grades slipped, I worked hard, kept the HOPE Scholarship, and attended the University of Georgia to study Political Science. Though I wanted to be a high school civics teacher, the 2008 recession pushed me into IT, where I quickly worked my way up to running a laboratory’s IT department. That experience led me to co-found iDetic Solutions, where we design and build laboratory automation and robotics equipment. I later earned my MBA from Emory and, with my amazing wife, opened Isaac’s Sandlot in Chamblee, an indoor playground for our families.

Through these experiences, I’ve seen firsthand the unnecessary challenges small businesses face with our local government. Even with all my advantages, I barely made it. I want small business ownership to be an attainable goal for all of our citizens. I don’t want to live in a city made up only of big-box stores. I am running for City Council to bring common-sense leadership that supports families, homeowners, and business owners while keeping Chamblee moving forward.

Priorities

What I’ll work on Day One

Safer Streets & Rail Trail Connections

Safer streets for walking and biking, and a complete Rail Trail connected to parks and other cities.

  • Crosswalks, lighting, and traffic calming where people actually walk and bike.
  • Close the small gaps that make big differences in safety and access.
  • Add additional traffic-calming measures to discourage cut-through commuting on neighborhood streets.

Thriving Local Businesses

Make Chamblee the easiest city in DeKalb to start and grow a small business.

  • Fix code and permitting with fast, predictable timelines for renovations and signage.
  • One-stop small-business help desk with SBDC/Chamber partners. Actually help.
  • Implement common-sense reviews with controlled flexibility when needed.

Open, Responsive Government

Better customer service, processes that citizens can actually navigate, and more fair election systems.

  • Simple requirements and clear timelines for permits and projects, with a process that includes common sense in order to keep us sane.
  • No more ignoring the citizens when they make their voices heard en masse.
  • Support district-based voting so neighborhoods choose their own representatives.
